Working in care in Redbridge
Why so much of Redbridge's care work starts in Ilford
Ask where the care jobs are in Redbridge and the answer is mostly Ilford. Nearly three quarters of the borough's care employers give an Ilford address, with a much smaller spread around Woodford Green and the Romford postcodes out towards Chadwell Heath. Roughly a third of employers are care homes, so there is a real choice between home care rounds and a fixed shift in a residential home.
The borough splits fairly neatly into two. In the south, Ilford, Seven Kings and Goodmayes sit on the Elizabeth line, with busy high streets and dense terraced housing. Further north, Gants Hill, Barkingside, Hainault and Woodford are reached by the Central line and its Hainault loop, and homes are more spread out, so driving starts to help on a home care round there.
Redbridge's population has changed a great deal. At the 2021 census almost half of residents described their ethnicity as Asian, up from around four in ten a decade earlier, and India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Romania were the most common countries of birth after England. If you speak a language common in those communities, such as Urdu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali or Romanian, list it.
The council's adult social care pages explain that people on direct payments can choose who supports them and may become an employer if they take on a personal assistant, so private PA work is part of the local picture. On the NHS side, Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust runs King George Hospital in Goodmayes, and NELFT provides community and mental health services across the borough. Redbridge Institute, the council's adult education service at Gants Hill, offers online Level 2 courses in subjects such as autism, learning disabilities and mental health awareness, free to eligible residents.
90% of the inspected care employers in Redbridge are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, close to the 88% across London and above England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Redbridge
Can I do a free care-related course in Redbridge?
Redbridge Institute says eligible residents can study free through the Mayor of London's Adult Education Budget. Its online Level 2 certificates cover topics such as understanding autism, working with learning disabilities and behaviour that challenges, which are useful alongside a care role.
Is it easier to work in south or north Redbridge without a car?
The south, around Ilford, Seven Kings and Goodmayes, is denser and well served by the Elizabeth line and buses. In the north, around Hainault and Woodford, homes are further apart and the Central line does not reach everywhere, so a car helps for home care.
Does Redbridge Council employ personal assistants itself?
No. Under direct payments the person receiving support chooses who helps them, and if they hire a personal assistant they become the employer. The council's role is to assess needs and agree the budget.
