Working in care in Staffordshire

From Leek to Tamworth: which part of Staffordshire suits your care work?

Staffordshire is a county of eight districts, running from the Moorlands hills above Leek down to Tamworth and Lichfield on the edge of the West Midlands conurbation. Its people are older than average: the CQC's 2025 assessment of the county council put the share aged 65 and over at about 22 per cent, against under 19 per cent for England. Care homes and home care agencies are close to even in number here, with a sizeable group of nursing homes as well.

Burton upon Trent and Stafford have the most care employers, followed by Cannock and Newcastle-under-Lyme, then Tamworth, with Lichfield and Leek further behind. Distance is the big variable. The county council's own market planning has noted that finding enough home care has historically been hardest in the north and east of the county, where people live further apart and travel times are longer. If you drive and are happy to cover those areas, your profile should say so plainly.

Staffordshire County Council pays direct payments, and its guidance explains that someone who employs a personal assistant becomes their legal employer, with Direct Payment Support Providers on hand to help with recruitment, DBS checks and payroll. The council also runs its own Independence at Home service, a CQC regulated short term care and reablement team helping people recover after illness or a hospital stay.

On the NHS side, University Hospitals of North Midlands runs County Hospital in Stafford and the Royal Stoke, while University Hospitals of Derby and Burton runs Queen's Hospital Burton and community hospitals in Lichfield and Tamworth. Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group offers an online Level 2 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care through its Newcastle, Stafford and Leek campuses.

79% of the inspected care employers in Staffordshire are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, close to the 79% across the West Midlands and below England as a whole (85%).
