Working in care in Stoke-on-Trent

Burslem, Hanley or Longton: where could you care in the Potteries?

Stoke-on-Trent is really six towns joined together in 1910: Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton, strung out roughly north to south, with Hanley usually treated as the city centre. That shape matters for care work. Services are spread along the whole length of the city rather than bunched in one middle, so a carer in Tunstall and a carer in Longton may know completely different sets of homes and clients.

It is a younger place than many people expect. The median age at the 2021 census was 38, below both the West Midlands and England at 40. Home care agencies outnumber care homes here, so plenty of the work is visiting people in their own homes. First Potteries runs the main bus network, and there are railway stations at Stoke and Longton, so getting between towns without a car is possible, though a car makes split shifts far easier.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council offers direct payments, and its own guidance says people can use them to choose and hire their own personal assistants. The council also runs Shared Lives Stoke, where approved carers share their family home with adults who have a learning disability, either for short stays or long term, helping with everything from personal care and medication to getting to work and going on holiday.

Royal Stoke University Hospital, run by University Hospitals of North Midlands, is the area's major hospital and also houses the Staffordshire Children's Hospital. For training, Stoke on Trent College offers a part time Level 2 Certificate in Health and Social Care at its Cauldon campus in Shelton, plus a Level 1 introductory course.

78% of the inspected care employers in Stoke-on-Trent are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, close to the 79% across the West Midlands and below England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Stoke-on-Trent

Can I get round the six towns for care work without a car?

Often, yes. The city is compact and First Potteries buses link the towns, with trains stopping at Stoke and Longton. Split shifts and early calls are easier with a car, so tell employers on your profile whether you drive.

What does a Shared Lives carer in Stoke-on-Trent do?

Shared Lives Stoke matches adults with a learning disability to approved carers who support them in the carer's own home, short term or permanently. Carers help with personal care, medication, appointments and daily life, and matches are based on shared interests.

Is there an evening or part time care course in Stoke?

Stoke on Trent College runs a part time Level 2 Certificate in Health and Social Care over 21 weeks at its Cauldon campus. There is also a Level 1 introduction for anyone completely new to care.
