Working in care in Worcestershire
From Redditch to the Malverns: what does care work look like across Worcestershire?
Worcestershire is a county of market towns strung along its rivers and hills, with Worcester itself holding the largest share of care services. Kidderminster and Stourport sit to the north west, Bromsgrove and Redditch lean towards Birmingham, and Malvern, Evesham and Droitwich each have a solid cluster of their own. Between them lie the Teme Valley, the Vale of Evesham and a lot of farmland, so a home care round outside the towns usually means driving.
Some parts of the county are much older than others. Census 2021 found Malvern Hills district had a median age of 50, the highest in the West Midlands, up from 47 a decade earlier. Around Malvern, Upton and Tenbury that translates into steady need for carers who know the area and can reach outlying villages, which is worth spelling out on your Carer Badge profile if you drive.
Worcestershire County Council's direct payments can be spent on employing someone to help, such as a personal assistant, as well as on agency care, day services or respite. Its rules say a close family member living in the same household cannot usually be employed unless the council has agreed, so most PA roles go to carers from outside the family.
On the NHS side, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust runs Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester, the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch and Kidderminster Hospital and Treatment Centre, while Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust provides community and mental health services. Heart of Worcestershire College offers a Level 2 Diploma and a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care at its Worcester and Redditch campuses.
86% of the inspected care employers in Worcestershire are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, above the 79% across the West Midlands and in line with England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Worcestershire
Is there care work in the Malvern area?
Yes. Malvern Hills district has the oldest population in the West Midlands by median age, and Malvern has a good number of care services of its own. Carers who drive can also reach villages towards Upton and the Teme Valley.
Where can I study health and social care in Worcestershire?
Heart of Worcestershire College runs a Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care and a Level 3 Extended Diploma at its Worcester and Redditch campuses, open to adults as well as school leavers.

Possibly, but Worcestershire County Council says direct payments cannot be used to employ a close family member who lives in the same household unless the council has agreed. A relative who lives elsewhere is a different situation, so check with the council first.
