Working in care in West Sussex

Coast or Crawley: where are the care jobs in West Sussex?

West Sussex divides neatly in two for anyone looking at care work. Along the coast runs a near continuous string of towns from Chichester through Bognor Regis and Littlehampton to Worthing, home to the bulk of the county's care services. Worthing alone has more than any other town in the county, with Bognor Regis and Chichester close behind each other and Littlehampton not far off. Inland, Crawley, Horsham, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill form a second, smaller cluster towards the Surrey border and the Mid Sussex towns.

The two halves have very different populations. Census figures for 2021 put the median age in Arun, which covers Bognor and Littlehampton, at 49, and in Worthing at 44. Crawley, by contrast, had a median age of just 37 and grew by about 11% in ten years. Residential homes edge out other types of employer county wide, many of them on the coast, while home care and nursing make up the rest.

West Sussex County Council offers direct payments on a pre-paid card, so people can buy their own help rather than take a service the council sets up. That is how much private one to one and personal assistant work comes about, alongside agency rounds.

University Hospitals Sussex runs Worthing Hospital, St Richard's in Chichester, the Princess Royal in Haywards Heath and Southlands in Shoreham. Chichester College teaches health and social care at two levels, plus apprenticeships and Access to HE routes into nursing, with work placements in local care settings.

86% of the inspected care employers in West Sussex are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, close to the 84% across the South East and in line with England as a whole (85%).
