Working in care in Surrey

Commuter towns and quiet villages: is Surrey a good place to work in care?

Surrey has no single big city. Instead it is a ring of busy towns, many with fast trains into London, separated by the North Downs, heathland and a lot of affluent villages. Woking has the most care employers, then Epsom and Camberley, with Guildford, Redhill, Leatherhead, Caterham and Horley not far behind. The care work follows the towns, but plenty of the people who need it live down lanes where buses are scarce.

The population is older in the rural districts. At the 2021 census Mole Valley, which takes in Leatherhead and Dorking, had a median age of 47, and Waverley, around Farnham, Godalming and Haslemere, had 44, both well above England's 40. Surrey also has a notably large nursing sector, with nursing homes making up almost a quarter of its care employers, so there is plenty of work supporting people with complex health needs alongside registered nurses.

Surrey residents on county council direct payments can hire a personal assistant, and the Surrey Independent Living Charity, known as SILC, helps them manage the money and take on PAs. If you would like to work for one person rather than an agency, that route is well established here.

Surrey is served by several NHS trusts, including Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust in Guildford, Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals, Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, and Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals. East Surrey College in Redhill runs Health and Social Care at Levels 1 to 3.

88% of the inspected care employers in Surrey are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, above the 84% across the South East and above England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Surrey

Who helps people in Surrey employ a personal assistant?

Surrey County Council points people with direct payments to the Surrey Independent Living Charity (SILC), an independent organisation that helps manage the money and employ personal assistants. The person you support, or someone acting for them, would be your employer.

Do I need a car for care work in Surrey?

In the towns you can often manage on foot or by bus, especially in care homes and nursing homes. Rural home care around places like Dorking, Cranleigh or Haslemere usually needs a car, so make clear on your profile whether you drive.

Is there much nursing home work in Surrey?

Yes. Nursing homes make up an unusually large share of Surrey's care employers, which means more roles working alongside nurses. It is good experience if you might train as a nurse or nursing associate later.
