Working in care in Buckinghamshire
From the Vale of Aylesbury to the Chiltern towns: where is the care work in Buckinghamshire?
Buckinghamshire is a big county with one council and two quite different halves. The north is open farmland around Aylesbury, Buckingham and Winslow, while the south runs through the Chiltern Hills to High Wycombe, Chesham, Amersham, Beaconsfield and Gerrards Cross on the edge of London. Aylesbury is the clear leader for care employers, High Wycombe comes second and Buckingham, Gerrards Cross and Chesham each a much smaller cluster.
Domiciliary agencies make up the biggest share of employers here, which fits a county with plenty of villages and a population density in the lowest third for England, according to the Census. Around 553,000 people lived here in 2021, nearly 10% more than ten years before, and the number aged 50 to 64 grew by about 16%. For most home care jobs outside the towns, a driving licence and a car make a real difference.
Buckinghamshire Council pays direct payments through a card or a managed account, and personal care from a self chosen PA is among the uses it lists. That creates one to one work across the county alongside agency rounds.
In the NHS, Buckinghamshire Healthcare runs Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, home of the National Spinal Injuries Centre, plus Wycombe Hospital and community health centres. Buckinghamshire College Group offers care and health courses in Aylesbury and Wycombe, from a Level 1 study programme up to an Extended Diploma and Access to HE for health professions.
75% of the inspected care employers in Buckinghamshire are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, below the 84% across the South East and below England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Buckinghamshire
Is Stoke Mandeville a good place to look if I want healthcare assistant experience?
It is the county's main acute hospital and also houses the National Spinal Injuries Centre, so the range of work is wide. Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust posts its own vacancies, and comparing them with social care roles nearby is sensible.
Is a car essential for Buckinghamshire home care rounds?
In Aylesbury or High Wycombe you may manage without, but much of the county is rural and the Census puts its population density among the lowest third in England. Rounds around Buckingham or the Chiltern villages generally need a car.
Which Buckinghamshire college campuses teach care?
Both the Aylesbury and Wycombe campuses of Buckinghamshire College Group offer health and social care, plus Access to HE courses for people aiming at nursing, midwifery or other health careers.
