Working in care in Liverpool

A young city with a fast growing older population: care work in Liverpool

Liverpool is a big, dense city, and most of its care work happens in people's own homes. Home care agencies make up more than half of local care employers, well ahead of care homes and nursing homes, so a typical role here means a round of visits across a cluster of neighbourhoods, perhaps Walton and Anfield in the north, West Derby and Croxteth to the east, or Garston and Speke in the south. Distances are short compared with rural areas, and buses and Merseyrail cover much of the city, though many rounds still assume you drive.

On paper Liverpool is young, with a median age of 35 that did not change between the last two censuses, with students making up a growing share of residents. Underneath that, Liverpool gained roughly 8,400 people aged 65 to 74, a rise of about a quarter. Some of them will want support to stay in their own homes in the years ahead.

Liverpool City Council's direct payments guidance explains that a person who employs a personal assistant becomes an employer with legal responsibilities, and its direct payments team helps with job descriptions, advertising and payroll. A family member can be paid as a PA only in very exceptional circumstances agreed by senior managers in adult services.

For hospital work, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree and Broadgreen. The City of Liverpool College offers an eight week, part time Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care Level 2 Certificate for adults, as well as Access to Higher Education diplomas in nursing and allied health, including an evening option.

78% of the inspected care employers in Liverpool are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, below the 84% across the North West and below England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Liverpool

Could a family member in Liverpool employ me through their direct payment?

Yes. The City of Liverpool College has an evening Access to Higher Education Diploma with a nursing and allied health professions pathway, which can lead to a university nursing course.
