Working in care in Bristol

Thinking about care work in Bristol? Start with where you would rather travel

Bristol is a young city by English standards. Census 2021 figures from the ONS put its median age at 34, the lowest in the South West and six years below England. Even so, it has a big care sector, and just over half of local care employers are home care agencies. That means much of the work is in people's own homes across a city of more than 470,000, from Southmead and Henbury in the north to Hartcliffe and Withywood in the south.

Getting around shapes the job. The centre has a Clean Air Zone, and Bristol City Council charges drivers of older, more polluting vehicles a daily fee to enter it, so it is worth checking your car before you agree to a round that crosses the middle of the city. Some carers here manage by bus or bike instead, and a care home within reach of home can make life much simpler.

Bristol City Council supports people who use direct payments to take on a personal assistant. Its guidance describes choosing who supports you, agreeing hours and finding a PA trained in your particular needs, and the council helps with job descriptions and recruitment. For a carer, that can mean steady, one to one work arranged around a single person.

Since 1 July 2026 the city's hospitals have been run by one organisation, Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, which brought together North Bristol NHS Trust, including Southmead Hospital, and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston, including the Bristol Royal Infirmary. City of Bristol College offers a Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care Award one day a week at its Ashley Down Centre.

99% of the inspected care employers in Bristol are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, above the 90% across the South West and above England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Bristol

Will Bristol's Clean Air Zone affect me as a home carer?

It might, if your car does not meet the zone's emission standards and your visits take you into the central zone. Use the government vehicle checker linked from the council's Clean Air Zone page, and look at the council's exemptions and financial support pages before you accept a city centre round.

Is there a course in Bristol for people learning English who want to work in care?

City of Bristol College runs Adult ESOL for Care, a ten week course at Ashley Down for people whose first language is not English. It covers care vocabulary, care plans, CVs and interview practice, and includes visits to employers.

Which NHS trust would I join for hospital work in Bristol?

Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, formed in July 2026 from the merger of North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston. It runs Southmead Hospital, the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Weston General Hospital, among other sites.
