Recruiting in North Northamptonshire

Finding staff in a fast-growing North Northamptonshire

North Northamptonshire's main towns sit close together, so a carer in Kettering may happily cover Corby or Wellingborough, and an agency in one town is often competing with services in the next for the same people. Kettering, Wellingborough and Corby each have a similar number of care employers, which means no single town dominates the local labour market.

The population grew by more than 42,000 between the 2011 and 2021 censuses, the second largest rise in the East Midlands. That brings new households needing support, and also new residents who may not yet know local employers. Poland is now the most common country of birth after England, and around 9,600 residents were born in Scotland. Rural rounds east towards Oundle and Thrapston are harder to staff, because the people who live out there are fewer and further apart.

Health services are recruiting from the same pool: Kettering General is the main acute hospital in the north of the county, and Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust runs community and mental health services. Tresham College's Health and Social Care students at Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough complete an industry placement, which is a natural route for services that host them. A Carer Badge search centred on Thrapston will turn up the handful of carers who already live in the eastern villages.

86% of the inspected care employers in North Northamptonshire are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, above the 82% across the East Midlands and in line with England as a whole (85%).

Questions about recruiting in North Northamptonshire

Do carers here move between Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough for work?

Many do, because the towns are close and employer numbers are similar in each. Expect candidates to compare offers across all three, and do not assume a Corby carer will only want Corby work.

Is there a local college that places health and social care students?

Yes. Tresham College, part of The Bedford College Group, runs a Level 3 Health and Social Care programme with an industry placement at its Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough campuses.
