Recruiting in Hampshire

One county, several labour markets: recruiting carers across Hampshire

Few employers recruit across the whole of Hampshire. A service in Fareham is really competing with Portsmouth and Southampton employers, a Fleet or Farnborough home sits beside the Surrey border and Frimley Health's hospitals, and an Andover agency may look as far as Salisbury. The New Forest has its own challenge: an older, slightly shrinking population and long rural distances between visits.

Nursing employers compete with several big hospital trusts, from Hampshire Hospitals in the north to the university hospitals serving Southampton and Portsmouth. The county's PA Finder also gives carers a free, council backed route into private one to one work, so agencies may be bidding against families for the same people.

A Carer Badge search around your own branch shows the carers already living in that corner of Hampshire, which matters more here than any county wide figure. Basingstoke, which grew by around a tenth in ten years, may give you a younger pool to draw on than the coast.

86% of the inspected care employers in Hampshire are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, close to the 84% across the South East and in line with England as a whole (85%).

Questions about recruiting in Hampshire

Is it harder to recruit carers in the New Forest?

It can be. The 2021 Census showed the New Forest population falling slightly while its median age rose to 51, so fewer working age people live close to the clients who need care. Drivers willing to cover rural rounds are especially valuable.

Which NHS integrated care board covers our Hampshire service?

NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board covers the county, and from 2026 North East Hampshire, including Farnborough and Fleet, aligned with it too. It is worth following their workforce plans if you employ nurses.
