Working in care in Southend-on-Sea
Why does so much of Southend's care work happen in Westcliff?
Southend-on-Sea is a compact, built up city on the Thames estuary, and its care employers are packed closely together. Westcliff-on-Sea, the stretch between the town centre and Leigh, has by far the largest share of them, with Leigh-on-Sea next. Unlike most places, care homes here run almost level with home care agencies, so if you would rather work in one building than travel between visits, you have more choice than in many parts of Essex.
Because the city is small, journeys tend to be short. Many carers can reach a care home or a home care round by bus, bike or on foot, and a car matters less than it does out in rural Essex. It still helps to say on your profile whether you drive, especially if you would consider work in Rochford, Hadleigh or Benfleet just outside the boundary.
Southend-on-Sea City Council runs its own adult social care, separate from Essex County Council. People can receive a direct payment through their assessment and support plan, and the city's direct payment advice service helps them understand what a personal assistant is and find PAs through local networks and registers. That means one to one PA work exists here alongside agency and care home jobs.
For hospital work, Southend University Hospital is run by Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, which also runs Basildon and Broomfield. NHS services across the area are planned by the NHS Essex Integrated Care Board. If you want a starting qualification, South Essex College offers an iLearn Adult Social Care course that is available through Southend City College, among its other centres.
84% of the inspected care employers in Southend-on-Sea are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, close to the 82% across the East and in line with England as a whole (85%).
