Working in care in Cambridgeshire
From Cambridge to the Fens: where does care work take you in Cambridgeshire?
Cambridgeshire is really several different places under one county council: Cambridge itself, South Cambridgeshire's commuter villages, Huntingdonshire, East Cambridgeshire around Ely, and Fenland in the north. The CQC's 2025 assessment of the council notes that the county's over 65 population grew by 26% between the last two censuses, well above the national rise, and that rural areas saw the bigger growth in older people even though towns grew faster overall.
Cambridge has by far the most care employers, then Huntingdon, Ely and St Neots, with March and Wisbech level with each other further north. Home care makes up around half of all employers, and in the flat, spread out Fenland villages that usually means driving between calls. Between Cambridge, St Ives and Huntingdon the Guided Busway gives you a car free option, which can widen the jobs within reach if you don't drive.
Private PA work exists here too: Cambridgeshire residents on county council direct payments can take on personal assistants, with a contracted support service handling recruitment and payroll. One rule to know: the council does not allow direct payments to pay a family member or partner who lives at the same address.
If NHS healthcare assistant work interests you, Cambridge University Hospitals runs Addenbrooke's and the Rosie, North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust runs Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon, and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health services. Cambridge Regional College teaches a Level 2 in Health and Social Care at both its Cambridge and Huntingdon campuses, and its Cambridge campus offers a T Level supporting the adult nursing team.
91% of the inspected care employers in Cambridgeshire are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, above the 82% across the East and above England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Cambridgeshire
Can I get to care jobs between Huntingdon and Cambridge without a car?
Often, yes. The Guided Busway links Huntingdon, St Ives and Cambridge, so care homes and some town based rounds along that corridor are reachable by bus. Rural rounds elsewhere in the county usually need a driver.
Can I be paid as a PA for a relative I live with in Cambridgeshire?
Not normally. Cambridgeshire County Council's direct payments guidance says the money cannot be used to pay a family member or partner living at the same address. You could still work as a PA for someone you don't live with.
Is there anywhere near Huntingdon to study health and social care?
Cambridge Regional College's Huntingdon campus on California Road runs Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 Health and Social Care courses. The same courses are also offered at its Cambridge campus.
