Recruiting in Cambridgeshire

Recruiting across Cambridgeshire's five very different districts

Recruiting in Cambridge, the youngest local authority area in the East of England at the 2021 census, is a different job from recruiting in Fenland towns such as March and Wisbech, where services cover a wide rural patch. A single county wide advert rarely suits both. The CQC has noted four Fenland communities among the 10% most deprived in England, and growth in older people has been highest in the rural parts of the county, which is exactly where travel between calls takes longest.

The Guided Busway changes the picture along one corridor. Homes and services between Huntingdon, St Ives and Cambridge can draw on carers who don't drive, while rounds out towards Ely, Chatteris or the Fenland villages generally can't.

Carer Badge lets a Wisbech service look for people living within a sensible drive of Wisbech, rather than waiting for someone to commute up from Cambridge. Nursing homes should expect competition for nurses from Addenbrooke's and Hinchingbrooke, both of which recruit across the county.

91% of the inspected care employers in Cambridgeshire are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, above the 82% across the East and above England as a whole (85%).

Questions about recruiting in Cambridgeshire

Why is it harder to recruit carers for Fenland than for Cambridge?

Fenland is rural and spread out, and the CQC has noted the fastest growth in older people in the county's rural areas. Calls are further apart, so services there depend on carers who drive and live locally.

Can people in Cambridgeshire pay a live in relative through direct payments?

No. Cambridgeshire County Council's guidance says direct payments cannot pay a family member or partner living at the same address, so families often look for personal assistants from outside the household.
