Recruiting in Essex

Recruiting care staff across a county of very different towns

Essex is really several labour markets side by side. West Essex looks towards Harlow and the Hertfordshire border, the south of the county runs along the Thames towards London, Chelmsford and Braintree sit in the middle, and Colchester and Tendring form a market of their own in the north east. A carer living in Basildon is unlikely to want regular rounds out at Harwich, so where someone lives counts for a lot when you are filling a package.

On the coast the challenge is different again. Tendring's population is much older than average, which brings steady demand, while the number of residents aged 35 to 49 there fell by about 12 per cent between the last two censuses. Finding people of working age who already live near the round matters.

Nursing homes face the sharpest competition. Three NHS trusts recruit nurses and healthcare assistants across the county, from Basildon, Broomfield and Southend to Colchester Hospital and The Princess Alexandra in Harlow, and the new single NHS Essex board is pulling those services closer together. Starting your search from your own building, and keeping it within the part of Essex your staff really live in, is the quickest way to find people who will stay.

85% of the inspected care employers in Essex are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, above the 82% across the East and in line with England as a whole (85%).

Questions about recruiting in Essex

Where do Essex care homes compete hardest with the NHS for staff?

Mainly around the acute hospitals: Basildon, Broomfield and Southend under Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, Colchester under East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, and The Princess Alexandra in Harlow. Homes near those sites are recruiting nurses and healthcare assistants from the same local pool as the hospitals.

Does Essex County Council cover Southend and Thurrock?

No. Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock run their own adult social care, but carers do not stop at council lines, and many around Basildon, Benfleet and Brentwood live in one area and work in another. Recruiting by distance rather than by council name brings them in.
