Working in care in City of London

Is there care work in the Square Mile, with so few people living there?

Some, but not much, and it helps to know why. The City of London is the smallest local authority area in England, about 1.12 square miles, and only around 8,600 people live among the offices. Most residents are concentrated in a few places, chiefly the Barbican Estate, while Portsoken ward on the eastern edge is the most diverse part of the City and among the most deprived fifth of areas in the country.

There are no care homes, nursing homes or supported living services inside the City at all. People who need residential care move out, and the CQC's 2026 assessment found most placements are within five miles, in neighbouring boroughs. So care work for City residents means home care, and the City of London Corporation commissions a single home care agency for most of it, with specialist support bought in from outside. The care employers registered at City addresses are home care services, and an office in the Square Mile does not necessarily mean the visits are there, so ask where a round actually is.

The Corporation offers direct payments, and the CQC heard that staff use them creatively, including helping people employ their own personal assistants and arrange culturally appropriate care. With so few residents, PA roles here are rare, but they do come up. The Corporation also runs a rapid response service giving up to 72 hours of support at home to avoid a hospital stay.

On the NHS side, St Bartholomew's Hospital at West Smithfield, part of Barts Health NHS Trust, is a specialist heart and cancer centre inside the City. The nearest college courses are just outside: Capital City College's King's Cross centre teaches Health and Social Care at Levels 1 to 3.

100% of the inspected care employers in City of London are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, above the 88% across London and above England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in City of London

Are there any care home jobs in the City of London?

Not inside the City itself, because there are no care homes, nursing homes or supported living services there. City residents who need residential care usually move to homes in neighbouring boroughs, so if you live nearby, set a travel distance that reaches into Islington, Hackney, Tower Hamlets or Southwark.

Can I work as a personal assistant for a City resident?

Yes, it is possible. The City of London Corporation offers direct payments, and the CQC found they are used to employ personal assistants. The person you support, or someone managing the budget for them, would be your employer.

Which NHS hospital is in the City of London?

St Bartholomew's Hospital in West Smithfield, run by Barts Health NHS Trust, is a national centre for heart and cancer care. City residents also use hospitals in neighbouring boroughs, including the Homerton in Hackney.
