Working in care in Hackney
Who needs a carer in a borough as young as Hackney?
Hackney is one of London's youngest boroughs. Its median age was 32 at the 2021 census, joint second lowest in London, so it is easy to assume there is little care work here. In fact older and disabled residents still need support at home, and the borough's care employers are mostly home care agencies, with only a handful of care homes. It is a compact inner London borough where Overground lines, including the Mildmay line through Dalston and the Weaver line through Hackney, and a dense bus network do much of the work a car would do elsewhere.
Few boroughs mix languages like this one. The council's census analysis counts 89 different main languages among residents. Turkish is the most common after English, Spanish comes third, and Hackney has more Yiddish speakers than anywhere else in the country, with its Orthodox Jewish community concentrated in the north east of the borough. Around one household in ten has no English speakers at all. If you speak Turkish, Spanish, Yiddish or any other language, it belongs on your profile.
Hackney Council pays direct payments every four weeks, and people can use them to employ their own carer. The council says this can include relatives who do not live in the same household, and it publishes guidance on advertising for, interviewing and choosing a personal assistant, plus help with payroll and tax. That makes PA work a genuine route here.
Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust runs Homerton University Hospital and community health services from more than 60 sites across Hackney and the City, if you are comparing care with NHS roles. To build skills, the council's Adult Learning team runs free courses for residents aged 19 and over, including English for speakers of other languages, and Capital City College has health and social care classrooms at Tottenham Green, just north of the borough.
87% of the inspected care employers in Hackney are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, close to the 88% across London and in line with England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Hackney
Is speaking Yiddish or Turkish useful for care work in Hackney?
Yes. Turkish is Hackney's most common main language after English, and the borough has the largest number of Yiddish speakers in the country. Carers who share a language with the person they support can make a real difference, so list every language you speak.
Can I be paid to care for a relative in Hackney?
Sometimes. Hackney Council allows direct payments to fund the employment of a relative from another household, and of a relative living with the person only where the council agrees it is necessary. The person you support, or someone acting for them, becomes your employer.
Do I need a car to do home care in Hackney?
Usually not. Hackney is compact and well served by Overground trains and buses, so many carers get between visits on foot or by public transport. Be clear about how far you are happy to travel when you apply.
