Working in care in Newham

Stratford, East Ham, Canning Town: what is caring in Newham really like?

Newham is the London borough that the Olympics put on the map, but most care work here happens a long way from the stadium: in terraced streets in Forest Gate and East Ham, tower blocks in Canning Town and newer flats round the Royal Docks. Home care dominates. Of the care employers registered in the borough, the great majority run home care, with relatively few care homes, so the typical job is a round of visits to people in their own homes.

It is a young place, with a median age of 32 at the 2021 census, one of the lowest in London, and it is one of the most mixed. Bengali was the main language for about 21,000 residents and Romanian for around 18,000, and Newham had more people than any other London borough who said they could not speak English well or at all. If you speak Bengali, Romanian, Urdu, Gujarati, Tamil or another community language, list it. Being able to explain a medication change in someone's own language is a skill employers here actively need.

Stratford is the hub for getting about, with the Jubilee and Central lines, the Elizabeth line, the DLR and Overground, plus more than 30 bus routes across the borough, so working without a car is realistic. Newham Council's direct payments guidance says a personal assistant could be someone who speaks the person's language or shares their interests, which makes PA work a natural fit for bilingual carers.

To train, Our Newham Learning and Skills, the council's adult learning service, runs a Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care and a Level 2 Certificate in Health and Social Care, and Newham College offers a part time Level 2 course for adults. Barts Health runs Newham Hospital in Plaistow if you are weighing NHS roles.

92% of the inspected care employers in Newham are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, above the 88% across London and above England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Newham

Are there free care courses for Newham residents?

Our Newham Learning and Skills says learners who meet its funding criteria can study at no cost, and its care courses start at Level 1 for complete beginners. Everyone has an interview and initial assessment first, and some people may have to pay a fee.

Does Newham Council let people choose a PA who speaks their language?

Yes. Its direct payments page says the person can employ their own PA, and that this could be someone who speaks their language, shares their interests or already knows them. The council says it will support people to set this up.

Is Stratford a good base for care work across Newham?

It is the borough's main transport interchange, so from there you can reach most of Newham by tube, DLR or bus. Rounds in Beckton or North Woolwich take longer by public transport, so think about that when you set your travel distance.
