Working in care in Southwark

Southwark runs from the river to Dulwich. Where would you want to work?

Southwark is a long borough. It starts at the Thames, with Bankside, Borough and Bermondsey, then stretches south through Walworth, Camberwell and Peckham to the leafier streets of Dulwich and Nunhead. The north is threaded with Tube lines; much of the south relies on buses, the Overground and suburban rail. That matters when you set your travel distance, because a round in Peckham can be quick from Camberwell and awkward from Rotherhithe.

Home care is overwhelmingly the main type of care employer here, far ahead of care homes, so most roles involve visiting people at home. Demand is set to grow: the 2021 census found the number of residents aged 50 to 64 had risen by almost 39% in ten years, the age group that will need support in the years ahead.

Southwark Council gives direct payments, and its guidance lists employing personal assistants as one of the uses. It does not normally allow someone to employ a family member who lives in the same house, except in exceptional cases agreed in advance. People who take a direct payment can use a support provider to help with payroll and employment issues, and one such service in the borough helps with recruiting PAs.

Two big teaching hospitals sit in the borough: Guy's, near London Bridge, run by Guy's and St Thomas', and King's College Hospital on Denmark Hill, with the Maudsley mental health hospital close by. Southwark College runs a Level 2 Certificate in Health and Social Care for people working towards a care career.

70% of the inspected care employers in Southwark are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, below the 88% across London and below England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Southwark

Can I be a paid personal assistant for a relative in Southwark?

Only in limited cases. Southwark Council's direct payments guidance says family members who live in the same house cannot normally be employed, except in exceptional circumstances arranged in advance. A relative who lives elsewhere is a different situation, so check with the person's social worker.

Is home care in south Southwark harder to reach without a car?

It can take longer. Peckham, Camberwell and Dulwich have no Tube station, so you will rely on buses and rail. Choose a travel distance that reflects how long journeys really take you.

Could I move from home care into the hospitals here?

Many carers compare roles with healthcare assistant jobs at Guy's, King's College Hospital or the Maudsley. Care experience is a useful foundation for those roles, and a Level 2 health and social care qualification helps too.
