Working in care in Tower Hamlets

Whitechapel to the Isle of Dogs: where does care work happen in Tower Hamlets?

Few places in England change as fast as Tower Hamlets. The 2021 census found its population had grown by more than a fifth in ten years, the biggest rise of any local authority, and at 30 its median age was the lowest in the country. That makes it a borough of young families and working adults, yet the older and disabled residents here still need support at home, and that is where most of the local work sits. Home care agencies make up the clear majority of care employers in the borough, with only a handful of care homes and nursing homes.

Getting around is rarely the problem. Visits from Bethnal Green to Bow or from Stepney down to Poplar are short, and the District and Central lines, the DLR and the Elizabeth line all run through. Plenty of carers here work rounds on foot, by bus or by bike.

Language matters more than almost anywhere else. Bengali, which in Tower Hamlets often means Sylheti, was the main language of around 33,000 residents at the last census, about one in ten people, and around 107,000 residents are of Bangladeshi heritage. If you speak Bengali or Sylheti, put it on your profile: for an older person who never fully settled into English, it can be the difference between being cared for and being understood.

Tower Hamlets Council took its direct payments support service in house in April 2024 and says it is working to grow the local pool of personal assistants, so PA work supporting one person or family is a real option. For NHS comparisons, Barts Health runs the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel and Mile End Hospital. New City College has a campus on Poplar High Street that teaches Health and Social Care.

92% of the inspected care employers in Tower Hamlets are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, above the 88% across London and above England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Tower Hamlets

Is speaking Sylheti useful for care work in Tower Hamlets?

Very often, yes. Bengali, including Sylheti, is the most common main language after English in the borough, and some older Bangladeshi residents are far more comfortable in it. Adding it to your profile lets employers who need a Bengali or Sylheti speaker find you.

Can I become a personal assistant through Tower Hamlets Council?

The council's own direct payments support service helps people recruit personal assistants and understand their duties as employers, and it has said it wants more PAs locally. You would be employed by the person you support, or by someone managing their budget, rather than by the council.

Do I need a car for home care in Tower Hamlets?

Usually not. The borough is compact and dense, and the tube, DLR, Elizabeth line and buses connect most neighbourhoods, so many rounds can be done on foot or public transport.
