Working in care in North Tyneside

Wallsend to Whitley Bay: care work along the Metro coast

North Tyneside runs from Wallsend and the riverside, where it merges into Newcastle without a break, out to the seaside towns of Tynemouth and Whitley Bay, with Killingworth and the newer estates further north. North Shields has the most care employers, Whitley Bay almost as many, and Wallsend a few fewer. Home care agencies are the largest group here, ahead of care homes and nursing homes, so a lot of the work is visiting people in their own homes across a fairly compact, built-up borough.

The population is getting older. The median age rose from 41 to 43 between the 2011 and 2021 censuses, and the number of people aged 65 to 74 jumped by almost a third, about 5,900 more people. Because the Metro loops through Wallsend, North Shields, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay, plenty of carers get to work without a car, although driving still widens the choice of rounds.

Personal assistant work has more structure here than in many places. North Tyneside Council's direct payment factsheets say people can employ a friend or family member as a PA, though they suggest thinking carefully about how it might affect the relationship. The North Tyneside Care Academy, which works to recruit and support the borough's care workforce, runs a Personal Assistant Hub with information on the role and an endorsed training pathway for new PAs.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust runs North Tyneside General Hospital, with its urgent treatment centre, and sends emergency patients to its specialist emergency care hospital in Cramlington. For study, TyneMet College offers health and social care courses, including a one year Access to HE Diploma in Health for adults aged 19 and over.

85% of the inspected care employers in North Tyneside are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, below the 93% across the North East and in line with England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in North Tyneside

What is the North Tyneside Care Academy?

It is a local hub set up to attract, recruit and support care workers across the borough, with resources, training and events. Its Personal Assistant Hub explains the PA role and points to an endorsed training pathway.

Can I be paid to support a friend in North Tyneside?

Possibly. The council's factsheet on employing a PA says people using direct payments can employ a friend or family member. Your friend would be your employer, so it is worth agreeing hours and duties in writing from the start.

Can I get to care jobs on the coast by Metro?

Often, yes. The Metro serves Wallsend, North Shields, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay, where most care employers are based. Home care rounds that cover several streets in a short time are still easier with a car or bike.
