Working in care in Redcar and Cleveland
From Redcar seafront to the East Cleveland villages: where are the care jobs?
Redcar and Cleveland stretches from the built-up streets of Eston and South Bank, along a long coastline through Redcar and Saltburn, and inland to Guisborough and the villages of East Cleveland. It is one of the older parts of the North East. The median age reached 46 at the 2021 census, second highest in the region, and the council's own figures, quoted by the CQC, put the number of residents over 65 at about 27% above what you would expect for an area this size.
That age profile shows in the work. Care homes are the largest group of care employers here, with home care agencies and nursing homes behind them, and Redcar itself has the most employers, followed by Saltburn. Out in East Cleveland the picture changes: small towns and villages such as Brotton, Skelton and Loftus are spread out, and home care visits there are much easier if you drive.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council pays direct payments so people can arrange their own support, and its guide to employing a personal assistant says a family member can be taken on as a PA. The person receiving care becomes the employer, with the usual duties around tax, contracts and holiday, which makes it a possible route for carers who want to support one person near home.
South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust runs Redcar Primary Care Hospital, with an urgent treatment centre and Zetland Ward, and East Cleveland Primary Care Hospital in Brotton, whose Tocketts Ward offers rehabilitation and palliative care. If you are new to the work, Redcar and Cleveland College runs a Level 2 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care, described by the college as a taster for people new to the sector.
87% of the inspected care employers in Redcar and Cleveland are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, below the 93% across the North East and in line with England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Redcar and Cleveland
Can I be a personal assistant for a family member in Redcar and Cleveland?
The council's guide to employing a personal assistant says people can employ a family member as their PA. Your relative, or whoever manages their direct payment, would be your employer, so talk to their social care worker about how it would be set up.
Is there NHS care work in East Cleveland, or is it all in Middlesbrough?
Not all of it. East Cleveland Primary Care Hospital in Brotton has a ward for rehabilitation and palliative care, and Redcar Primary Care Hospital has Zetland Ward and an urgent treatment centre. The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough is the main acute hospital.
Will I need a car for home care around Guisborough and Loftus?
It helps a great deal. The eastern side of the borough is rural, with villages some distance apart, so drivers can take on more rounds. If you don't drive, care homes in Redcar or Saltburn may be easier to reach.
