Working in care in Bolton

From Horwich to Farnworth: is Bolton a good place to build a care career?

Bolton is a big borough with a town centre at its heart and a ring of smaller places around it, including Horwich and Blackrod to the west, Westhoughton to the south west and Farnworth, Kearsley and Little Lever to the south and east. Agencies sending carers into people's homes outnumber care homes by roughly three to two, so visiting people in their own homes is where much of the local work sits.

The population grew by almost 7% between the last two censuses, to around 296,000, and the median age held steady at 38, younger than the North West as a whole. The group aged 50 to 64 still rose by about 5,800. Bolton is also more diverse than ten years ago, with a fifth of residents now of Asian heritage, so languages such as Gujarati or Urdu are worth adding to your profile if you speak them.

Bolton Council's adult social care was rated good by the Care Quality Commission in a report published in February 2026. People who qualify for support may choose a direct payment instead of council arranged care, with three district teams handling queries, so private personal assistant roles exist alongside agency work. The council also advertises its own adult social care vacancies through the Greater Jobs recruitment platform.

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust runs the Royal Bolton Hospital in Farnworth as well as community services. Bolton College offers adults a Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care Level 1 Award, a Pathway to Health and Social Care course and a Dementia Awareness award, and has a training hospital ward called The Pulse.

90% of the inspected care employers in Bolton are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, above the 84% across the North West and above England as a whole (85%).

Yes. Bolton College runs a Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care Level 1 Award and a Pathway to Health and Social Care course for adults, with several start dates through the year.

Can I get to Royal Bolton Hospital for NHS shifts without a car?

The hospital is on Minerva Road in Farnworth, south of the town centre. If you rely on buses, check journey times for early and late shifts before applying, as timetables can differ outside the working day.
