Working in care in Halton
Widnes or Runcorn? Care work on both sides of the Mersey
Halton is two towns facing each other across the River Mersey. Widnes sits on the north bank and has slightly more care employers, while Runcorn, a new town with large estates such as Castlefields, Halton Lodge and Palacefields, sits to the south. Two road bridges link them, the Silver Jubilee Bridge and the Mersey Gateway, and both are tolled. Eligible Halton residents can register with the toll operator for unlimited crossings, although an admin fee applies, so if you live in one town and might work in the other, sort that out early.
Care homes are the largest group of employers here, with home care agencies and nursing homes making up the rest. It is a small borough, so most care homes and rounds are within a short drive or bus ride of each other.
The local population is ageing fast. Between the 2011 and 2021 censuses Halton gained almost 4,000 people in their late sixties and early seventies, a rise of nearly 40%, while the 35 to 49 group shrank. Halton Borough Council supports people who choose direct payments to employ their own personal assistants instead of an agency, and its Direct Payments Team helps with recruitment, contracts, DBS checks and payroll. Close family living in the same household normally cannot be paid this way unless a social worker agrees to exceptional circumstances.
North Cheshire and Mersey NHS Foundation Trust runs Halton Hospital in Runcorn and Warrington Hospital, along with community health services across the borough. Riverside College in Widnes offers Access to Higher Education courses in Nursing, Midwifery and Health Professionals, online or in the classroom.
77% of the inspected care employers in Halton are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, below the 84% across the North West and below England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Halton
Do I have to pay the bridge toll to get to work between Widnes and Runcorn?
Both bridges are tolled, but eligible Halton residents can register for unlimited crossings for an admin fee. If you live outside Halton, check the toll operator's charges before agreeing to a cross river round.
Can I train to be a nurse while working in care in Halton?
Riverside College offers Access to Higher Education in Nursing, available online or classroom based, which can lead on to a nursing degree. The online option can make it easier to fit study around care shifts.
Can I be paid to care for my mum in Halton through direct payments?
Only in limited cases. Halton's rules say direct payments normally cannot pay a spouse, partner or family member who lives in the same household, unless a social worker agrees there are exceptional circumstances. Relatives living elsewhere are a different matter, so ask the Direct Payments Team.
