Working in care in Isles of Scilly

Is there care work on the Isles of Scilly, 28 miles off Land's End?

There is, but it looks nothing like care work on the mainland. Around 2,100 people live on the islands, and the population is getting older fast: the median age reached 50 at the 2021 census, ten years above England's, and more than one resident in four is 65 or over. Almost everything is centred on St Mary's, the largest island, with smaller communities on Tresco, Bryher, St Martin's and St Agnes.

The one registered care employer here is the Council of the Isles of Scilly itself. For years its residential home, respite beds and home care were run from Park House in Hugh Town. That service is moving into a purpose-built care home on the St Mary's Community Hospital site, part of a joint project with Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust that also brings NHS inpatient beds and a maternity suite under one roof.

Private care in people's own homes matters a great deal on the islands. In 2025 the council's adult social care team held an open session specifically to find residents willing to provide private care, describing it as a chance to be self-employed, work anywhere across the islands and choose flexible hours. The council also offers personal budgets as direct payments, so someone can arrange and pay for their own support.

Housing is the honest catch. The council has said publicly that mainland applicants have turned down care roles without secure long-term accommodation, and it has appealed to property owners to let homes to care staff. If you already live on Scilly, or have somewhere to stay, say so clearly on your profile.

0% of the inspected care employers in Isles of Scilly are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, below the 90% across the South West and below England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in Isles of Scilly

Can I be a self-employed carer on the Isles of Scilly?

Yes. The council's adult social care team has actively looked for residents who could provide private care in people's homes, working for themselves across the islands. Contact the team on St Mary's to talk it through before you start.

Is there NHS healthcare assistant work on the islands?

St Mary's Community Hospital has inpatient beds, a minor injury unit and a community nursing service, all run by Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Its healthcare assistant vacancies, including bank roles, are advertised through NHS Jobs.

Will a care job on Scilly come with somewhere to live?

Sometimes, but never assume it. Housing on the islands is very tight, and the council has said that finding long-term accommodation for care staff is one of its biggest recruitment problems. Check what is offered with each role before you plan a move.
