Working in care in Walsall

Bloxwich to Brownhills, Willenhall to Aldridge: where is the care work in Walsall?

The borough of Walsall is more than its town centre. Since 1974 it has also taken in Aldridge, Bloxwich, Brownhills, Darlaston, Pelsall and Willenhall, places with their own high streets and a shared history of leather and lock making. Around 284,000 people lived here at the 2021 census. It is a fairly young borough, with a median age of 38 against 40 for England, and an increasingly diverse one: the share of residents of Asian heritage rose from about 15 to almost 19 per cent in ten years.

Home care agencies outnumber care homes here, so a good deal of the work happens in people's own homes. Among the named towns, Willenhall has the most care employers, with a smaller group on the Wednesbury side towards Darlaston. Distances are short compared with rural counties, and many rounds can be reached by bus, but a car helps on the more spread out northern and eastern edges around Brownhills and Aldridge. If you speak a second language, put it on your profile, since a shared first language can put an older client at ease.

Walsall Council pays direct payments so that people can arrange their own care, which is how many personal assistant roles come about. The council also runs a Shared Lives scheme, where registered carers support adults from their own homes, from day visits to long term live in arrangements, and a community reablement service staffed by reablement officers and therapists.

For NHS roles, Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust runs the Manor Hospital as well as community services such as district nursing. Walsall College, at its Wisemore campus in the town centre, teaches health and social care courses and apprenticeships, including the Healthcare Support Worker standard, and has close links with the Manor for work experience.

75% of the inspected care employers in Walsall are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, below the 79% across the West Midlands and below England as a whole (85%).
