Working in care in Bradford

City, valley towns and Wharfedale: where are the care jobs in Bradford district?

Bradford district stretches a long way beyond the city. Follow the Aire valley north west and you pass through Shipley and Bingley to Keighley, then cross into Wharfedale for Ilkley. Keighley has the largest group of care services outside the city, Shipley and Ilkley are not far behind, and the moorland villages in between, Haworth and Silsden among them, have care needs of their own. Home care makes up about half of the district's services.

It is one of the youngest and most diverse places in the country. Census 2021 put the median age at 36, the joint lowest in Yorkshire and the Humber, and 32 per cent of residents identified as Asian or Asian British, with around three in ten describing themselves as Muslim. Families often look for a carer who shares their language or understands their faith, so if you speak Urdu, Punjabi, Pahari or Bengali, put it on your Carer Badge profile. Wharfedale is a different picture again, quieter and more spread out, with smaller towns such as Ilkley and Burley.

People in Bradford who receive direct payments from the council are free to hire their own staff, often called personal assistants, for personal care, social activities and help around the home. Its rules rule out employing family members or a partner who live in the same household, but PA roles with other individual employers exist across the district.

For NHS comparison there are two acute trusts: Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Bradford Royal Infirmary, and Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, whose Airedale General Hospital serves Keighley, the upper Aire valley and Craven. Bradford College offers a Level 2 Certificate and a Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care, and Keighley College runs Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care and an Adult Care Worker apprenticeship.

82% of the inspected care employers in Bradford are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, close to the 84% across Yorkshire and Humberside and below England as a whole (85%).
