Working in care in North Yorkshire

England's largest county: how far will you travel to care?

North Yorkshire stretches from the Pennine dales to the coast, and few places in England put more miles between care visits. Harrogate has the most care employers, followed by Scarborough, then Selby, Whitby, Northallerton, Skipton, Ripon and Malton. In between are moorland villages, farming communities and long valley roads where getting to a single home care call can take longer than the visit itself. In much of the county a full licence and your own car make home care workable; without them, a care home in a market town is the more practical choice.

Older people make up a large share of the population, especially on the coast. Census 2021 found the median age in the former Scarborough borough had jumped four years in a decade to 50, ten years older than England as a whole. That is why Scarborough and Whitby have so many care services for their size.

North Yorkshire Council offers direct payments that people can use to employ personal assistants for personal care, social activities, keeping up relationships and help around the home, though not someone living in the same household. Each person gets a direct payments adviser to help with recruiting and managing staff. For carers in rural areas, a PA role close to home can be easier than an agency round.

The NHS here is split between several trusts. Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust runs Harrogate District Hospital, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals runs Scarborough Hospital and community hospitals including Malton and Selby, and the Friarage in Northallerton is part of South Tees Hospitals. Craven College in Skipton offers Health and Social Care at Levels 2 and 3, and Scarborough TEC runs an Adult Care Worker apprenticeship and a Health and Social Care T Level.

89% of the inspected care employers in North Yorkshire are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, above the 84% across Yorkshire and Humberside and above England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in North Yorkshire

Do I need a car to be a home carer in North Yorkshire?

In most of the county, yes. Buses between villages are often infrequent, so home care outside the larger towns usually relies on carers who drive. In Harrogate, Scarborough or Selby you may manage without, especially in care homes.

Can I work as a personal assistant for someone in a rural village?

Yes. North Yorkshire Council's direct payments can pay for a personal assistant, and each person has a direct payments adviser to help them recruit. Living nearby is a big advantage for this kind of role.

Where can I train for care work on the North Yorkshire coast?

Scarborough TEC offers an Adult Care Worker apprenticeship for people working in residential, nursing or home care settings, and a Health and Social Care T Level for younger learners.
