The census numbers tell North East Lincolnshire employers what they already feel: residents aged 35 to 49 fell by about a sixth in a decade, while the older population grew. That leaves a smaller local pool for care homes, which make up half the area's services, and for agencies covering Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

Because so much of the work sits in one urban area, most carers live within a short bus ride or drive of it, and many will have trained at Grimsby Institute. Beyond that, the next towns of any size, Scunthorpe and Louth, are far enough away that daily commuting in from them is a big ask. Nurses are in demand from Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, so nursing homes should expect competition for every registered nurse who applies.
