Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham: who needs carers here?
North East Lincolnshire is a small borough on the south bank of the Humber, and its care work is concentrated to an unusual degree. Grimsby, with Cleethorpes running into it along the coast, accounts for the great majority of local care employers. Immingham and the villages inland, around Waltham, Healing and Laceby, have only a handful between them. Care homes are the largest group, outnumbering home care agencies, so residential work is easier to find here than in many places.
The population is ageing faster than it is growing. Census 2021 showed the borough's population had fallen slightly in ten years while the median age rose two years to 43, above the Yorkshire and England figures. Residents aged 65 to 74 increased by almost a fifth, and the number of people aged 35 to 49 dropped sharply. Fewer working age residents and more older ones is exactly the mix that keeps care employers recruiting.
One thing that sets this area apart is how social care is run. Adult social work is delivered on the council's behalf by Focus Independent Adult Social Work, which operates a 24 hour Single Point of Access phone line. Its Social Care Handbook explains that people can take their care money as a direct payment, paid onto a card account, and use it to hire a personal assistant, with local help on recruitment, tax and National Insurance.
Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby is run by Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, now working with Hull's hospitals as NHS Humber Health Partnership. Grimsby Institute at Nuns Corner offers a work based Level 2 Adult Care Worker apprenticeship and a Health and Science T Level focused on supporting adult nursing teams.
88% of the inspected care employers in North East Lincolnshire are rated Good or Outstanding by the CQC, above the 84% across Yorkshire and Humberside and above England as a whole (85%).

Questions about care work in North East Lincolnshire
Who do I contact about social care support in North East Lincolnshire?
Focus Independent Adult Social Work runs the Single Point of Access for the council, on 01472 256 256, open around the clock. It handles assessments, reablement, carer support and safeguarding.
Is there care work outside Grimsby and Cleethorpes?
Some, but not much. Most services are in the Grimsby and Cleethorpes urban area, so carers living in Immingham or the villages often travel in, and a car helps for anything beyond the main bus routes.
Can I train as a carer through Grimsby Institute while working?
Yes. Its Adult Care Worker apprenticeship at Level 2 is entirely work based, with visits from a trainer coach, and can lead on to a Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker apprenticeship.
